The Labour Party has launched its campaign for the local and European elections.

It has 111 candidates contesting local council seats - of which 41% are women and 50 are first time candidates.

In the European election Alex White is seeking a seat in Dublin; Dominic Hannigan is seeking a seat in the midlands north-west and Sheila Nunan is seeking a seat in Ireland south.

Labour leader Brendan Howlin said voting for Labour is the only way to ensure a more social Europe.

He said his party is more energised than it has been in a long time and that Labour is "missed" in parts of the country where it no longer has representation.
