Senator Alice-Mary Higgins is to run as in independent candidate in the European Elections in the Dublin constituency.
The Independent Senator, who is the leader of the Civil Engagement Group in the Seanad, gathered the signatures of 60 Dubliners for her candidacy.
Ms Higgins said she chose this method of nomination because it reflected what she wanted for the EU - "a more direct connection with the public".
She said she would be formally launching her election manifesto over the coming week.
Ms Higgins was elected to the Seanad on the NUI panel in 2016 and was formerly policy coordinator with the National Women's Council of Ireland.
She is the eldest child of President Michael D Higgins and Sabina Higgins.
