Former Fine Gael TD John Browne passes away

The death has taken place of John Browne the former Fine Gael TD for Carlow-Kilkenny.

Mr Browne, who was aged 82, served as a TD for the constituency for almost 14 years from 1989 to 2002.

He also was also nominated to Seanad Éireann in 1983 and had been elected a Fine Gael councillor in Carlow in 1979.

A native of County Clare Mr Browne was a fluent Irish speaker and his love of the language was evident in his many contributions in the Dáil and Seanad.

Mr Browne's son Fergal was also a Fine Gael Senator from 2002 to 2007.

Both father and son were also elected the Chairperson of Carlow County Council, seventeen years apart.

The Taoiseach paid tribute to Mr Browne today saying he was someone who dedicated his life to helping others and he will be much missed.
