Sinn Féin's finance spokesperson Pearse Doherty is to launch a bill to prevent home loans being sold on without the consent of the borrower.

Deputy Doherty said the Central Bank's Code of Practice stated that lenders could not sell a mortgage to another lender without the consent of the borrower, but that banks "have turned a blind eye" to this because it is voluntary.

"The idea that we allow banks to just sell on to whoever, regardless of who they are, regardless of what their long-term interest is in the State, or how they will deal with those loans in the future without the consent of the borrower is simply not on," Mr Doherty said.

He added that his proposed bill would ensure the Central Bank's Code of Practice is put in primary legislation.

Deputy Doherty said that Sinn Féin also planned to hold public meetings to end the practice of banks selling of loans to so-called vulture funds against the wishes of homeowners.

He described the proposed sale of 6,000 home loans by Permanent TSB to Pepper Finance Corporation as a "new low".

Mr Doherty said there were other ways of dealing with non-performing loans.
