Former Fianna Fáil minister Mary Hanafin has announced that she intends to seek a nomination from the party to run for the European elections in May 2019.

Ms Hanafin, who is currently a councillor for the Dún Laoghiare constituency, made the announcement in Blackrock.

She said: "There has not been a Fianna Fáil MEP for Dublin since 2009 and as the candidate who has continued to work for the party and to represent the people of Dublin as a Councillor throughout that time I hope to win over the votes of the delegates.

"A convention will be held in January on a one member one vote system.

"I aim to meet and speak with as many delegates as possible over the next few weeks to win their support to represent Dublin in the European Parliament."

Ms Hanafin was first elected as a TD in 1997, and then returned in 2002 and 2007.

She has held several ministerial posts, including minister for education. She lost her Dáil seat in the 2011 general election.
