Fianna Fáil TDs seeking to table amendments to the legislation that will change Ireland’s abortion laws will first have to submit them to the party’s health spokesperson Stephen Donnelly.

The agreement was reached at a meeting of the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party in Leinster House.

The move is viewed by some in the party as an attempt to quell internal opposition to the legislation.

However, the party’s TDs will be able to share their thoughts on the legislation when it begins its journey through the Oireachtas on Thursday.

They will also be allowed to support amendments tabled by TDs from outside the party.

Party Leader Micheál Martin strongly supported repealing the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution but almost half of the party’s TDs voted against the holding of a referendum on the issue.
