Fine Gael TD for Cork North Central Dara Murphy has announced he will not contest the next general election.
The former minister of state for Europe has written to party members in the constituency to inform them of his decision.
The Fine Gael selection convention for North Cork is due to take place in the coming weeks.
Mr Murphy was elected to the Dáil in 2011 and previously served as Lord Mayor of the Cork.
Enda Kenny appointed him as a minister of state in 2014.
He lost that role when Leo Varadkar took over as Fine Gael leader last year.
Mr Varadkar said: "I want to thank Dara for his extraordinary service to Fine Gael and to Cork as a councillor, TD and a minister.
"I am pleased that he will continue as director of elections for the EPP for the European elections, and to remain as EPP Vice President. He has my full support on both counts.
"So while Dara might be leaving the Dáil, he is certainly not leaving political life or Fine Gael. I look forward to working with him closely during the next phase of his career."
