Watch: Mattel launches first autistic Barbie doll

Toy giant Mattel has launched its first autistic Barbie doll.

The doll was created with insights from the Autistic Self Advocacy Network in the US and is meant to reflect how neurodivergent people experience the world.

The Barbie features intentional design details such as a side-eye gaze and accessories like a fidget spinner, noise-cancelling headphones, and a communication tablet.

The new doll follows the footsteps of other Barbies that were launched to increase inclusivity among children's toys including Barbies with Down syndrome, type 1 diabetes and visual impairment.

Ahead of its release, the Barbie was shown to autistic five-year-old Penelope, whose mum Tonya said it is "huge for children to have a Barbie that represents them".
