Airplane passenger sees Iceland volcano eruption through window

An airplane passenger filmed an Icelandic volcano erupting on Sunday, with lava flowing and thick smoke rising into the sky illuminated an orange hue.

According to the eyewitness, the flight had left from Keflavik International Airport and was heading to Vienna when passengers were treated to the unique scene while flying over Grindavik.

The volcano had erupted on Saturday for the fourth time since December. It was still spewing smoke and bright orange lava into the air yesterday although infrastructure and a nearby fishing town were safe for now, authorities said.

Magma had been accumulating underground on the Reykjanes peninsula near Iceland's capital Reykjavik since the last eruption in February, prompting authorities to warn of an imminent eruption.
