An Post is releasing a new six-stamp booklet celebrating some of Ireland's leading sportswomen, ahead of International Women's Day on 8 March.
The stamps come at a time when the calibre of performance of Irish sportswomen is at a particularly high point, An Post said, with athletes excelling at international level competition across a range of disciplines.
The featured athletes include Olympic boxing gold medallists Kellie Harrington and Katie Taylor, the Ireland women's hockey team, who were silver medallists at the 2018 World Cup and have qualified for the finals again this year, and Ellen Keane, whose gold medal at the Paralaympics in 2021 was a career highlight for the swimmer.
Also included are Rachael Blackmore, the first female top jockey at Cheltenham and the first woman to win the Aintree Grand National, and Ireland’s most successful female track and field athlete, Sonia O’Sullivan, who won 16 major World, European and Olympic medals in a glittering career.
Designed by Dublin studio Unthink, the stamps feature powerful sporting moments, captured by photo journalists from Irish agencies Inpho and Sportsfile and for Getty Images.
Speaking at the unveiling of the stamps with members of the Irish Hockey Team at the GPO, Hildegard Naughton, Minister of State at the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications said: "These stamps celebrate of the achievements of Irish women in sport – not just here in Ireland but on a world stage.
"It is especially fitting that these stamps will be issued by An Post ahead of International Women's Day".
An Post said it has previously issued stamps marking the achievements of pioneering Irish women and women in literature.
It added that future stamps will mark the success, contribution and resilience of women across Irish society.
The booklet will be available in all Post Offices from tomorrow, or can be ordered from the An Post website.
