A sheep has been rescued after becoming stuck on a cliff on Lambay Island off the Dublin coast.

The Irish Coast Guard were alerted to the unusual situation by a member of the public yesterday evening and a boat crew was dispatched to the island.

The team arrived on the scene and discovered that the lamb - dubbed 'Lucky Louis' - was stuck 10 metres down a cliff on the island.

However, when the rescue team approached, Louis went on the lam and made for a nearby cave.

Two of the Coast Guard crew managed to catch the intrepid ovine and brought him back to the boat.

The seven-month-old lamb was then brought back to the Lambay Island harbour and handed over to staff on the island.

Despite some small cuts he was otherwise in good spirits when returned to solid ground, the Coast Guard have said.
