Stargazers were treated to a spectacular sight last night, as the Perseid Meteor Shower passed over the country.

The meteor shower, which peaked on both Wednesday night and last night, showed 20 times more shooting starts than normal light.

Astronomy Ireland says that the Perseids are the result of Earth passing through a cloud of dust and as it moves, the particles fall into the atmosphere and burn up. This results in meteors or shooting stars.

Perseids are known to leave long "wakes" of light and colour behind them as they streak through Earth's atmosphere, and are known as one of the most plentiful showers with approximately 50-100 meteors seen per hour.

This meteor shower is known for its fireballs - large explosions of light and colour that can last longer than an average meteor streak.

Astronomy Ireland says that Perseids have been observed for around 2,000 years.
