A videographer has captured the moment his drone crashed into the erupting Fagradalsjfall volcano in Iceland.

The stunning video, shot on 24 May, brings the viewer up close to the shield volcano and right into the molten lava.

Drone operator and YouTuber Joey Helms told Reuters that being able to manually operate the first-person-view flying drone made it an immersive and unique experience, though the volcano's conditions also made it "tricky".

"Around the volcano where you have the hot gases emitted they cause turbulences all around it and hot rocks raining on to you, flying these things is even more tricky."

Fagradalsfjall, a mountain on the Reykjanes Peninsula, began erupting in March, for the first time since the 12th Century.
