The first patient recovered from the novel coronavirus has been discharged from a makeshift field hospital set up in the outskirts of Madrid.

Footage released by Madrid authorities showed medical teams applauding as the young man walked out of the facility yesterday afternoon.

The city's IFEMA complex has previously been a venue for an annual tourism fair and Madrid Fashion Week.

According to the Spanish media, the field hospital, with 5,500 beds and dedicated intensive care units, was set up by members of different health and emergency organisations.

With more than 35,000 positive cases, Spain is the worst-hit European country after Italy.
