A 12-year-old boy escaped a bushfire in Australia by driving a vehicle away from fast moving flames on Sunday.

Lucas Sturrock was alone at his family's property, when his father Ivan and brother Dale went to fight a bushfire at Mogumber in Western Australia.

When the fire, which has burnt over 7,500 hectares, approached the house, Lucas grabbed the family's dog and drove to a pre-arranged meeting spot.

But when he got there, the flames started threatening the meeting point too, and the schoolboy was forced to drive off to safety.

Ivan and Dale returned to find Lucas missing and reported the case to the authorities.

Fortunately, local fire crews managed to find the boy, and he was then reunited with his family by the police.
