An oven has been sent to space, along with scientific instruments and crew supplies for those on board the International Space Station.

The oven, along with baking ingredients, are expected to be used to make chocolate chip cookies.

It will help examine the impact that high heat and zero gravity might have on the shape and consistency of the sweet treat.

The experiment is just one of a dozen experiments the astronauts will conduct, space.com reported.

The space craft, carrying 3,700kg in cargo, launched from Wallops Island, Virginia, yesterday and is expected to reach the ISS tomorrow at 9.10am.

Mounted to an Antares rocket, the Cygnus cargo craft lifted off at 1.59pm Irish time yesterday.
