Dublin Simon Community has received a surprise donation of 100 hand-knitted hats from an 80-year-old woman from Germany.

Doris Brandt, who said her hobby is "doing good for others", sent the hats to Ireland after she heard about an appeal for "winter woolies" in Dublin.

The keen knitter had been chatting to a friend whose daughter works in the capital.

"On behalf of Dublin Simon Community, we would like to say a huge thank you to Doris for her generous and thoughtful donation. Donations of winter woolies and warm clothing are extremely vital and always greatly appreciated to ensure that our street outreach teams have enough items to distribute to people in need of support," said a spokeswoman for the charity.
