Zookeepers at Denmark’s Odense Zoo had to intervene after a gay penguin couple kidnapped a chick from another couple.

One of the males had previously tried brooding on stones. But when they saw the young chick briefly unattended on Monday, they swooped in.

After the chick was reunited with its parents, keepers decided to give the gay penguins an egg from a mother who had previously abandoned chicks and eggs.

One of the prospective fathers is now happily brooding on the egg.

According to zoologist Mikkel Stelvig, homosexuality is rather rare in the animal kingdom, but when it happens it is usually among penguins and other birds.
