An airport van driver on the way to an employee barbecue crossed a runway and was narrowly missed by a jetliner that was taking off.

The Envoy Air jet, with 50 passengers and three crew members on board, was taking off on 27 June from Missouri's Springfield-Branson National Airport in the US.

Footage of the incident shows the van clearing the jet's path with just seconds to spare.

According to a report obtained by the Springfield News-Leader, the van's driver said he decided to cross the runway to make the barbecue on time.

He said a ground controller had cleared him to cross runway 14, but halfway across he saw the plane coming down the runway.

The National Transportation Safety Board was said to be investigating, while an internal review by the airport was also under way.
