Beatlemania returned to Liverpool this week as Paul McCartney performed in the Cavern Club.

The 76-year-old yesterday played a surprise gig for about 270 fans - some of whom were in tears during the performance.

It was the first time since 1999 that McCartney had returned to the club, which is credited with being the birthplace of the Beatles.

After playing Magical Mystery Tour, he said: "All those years ago we came here and played and we didn't know if we had any future. But we did OK.
