The Government has confirmed that one Russian diplomat based in Dublin will be expelled from Ireland.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar told the Dáil that the decision was taken in solidarity with the UK.

The US and EU members plan to expel scores of Russian diplomats in action against the Kremlin for the nerve agent attack on Sergei Skripal and his daughter which they have blamed on Russia.

NATO also said it would expel seven Russian diplomats to show that Moscow faces "costs and consequences" over a nerve agent attack on a former spy in Britain.

Russia, which denies any part in the 4 March attack on the Skripals, says the West's action is a "provocative gesture" and has said it will respond.
