The murder of a Kerry man in the United States almost 100 years ago is under the spotlight in a documentary to be broadcast on RTÉ One.
Patrick M Foley was a writer, historian, nationalist and native of Daingean Uí Chúis peninsula.
However, his writings, adventurous life and violent death have largely been forgotten until now.
Foley emigrated to the US in 1909 and travelled extensively through Mexico, Cuba, Canada, as well as the US midwest and south. He spent his final days in Sallisaw, Oklahoma.
His granddaughter, Mary McGillick, is among the contributors.
Speaking on RTÉ's News at One, she said that the cause of her grandfather's death is still relatively unknown.
"The story that we heard was that he got work on the railways, and postcards came home from all sorts of places, from Vancouver or Toronto, Cuba, Mexico, and all over the United States. And he certainly sent home money to his family," she said.
"But what he did while he was over there, we really don't know.
"He was an American citizen. He'd had taken out citizenship, and he had applied for permission to bring his son Michael to America. But then he got himself killed.
"Assassinated is the word that's on his death certificate. It was a pretty gruesome death.
"My mother always had the story that the Ku Klux Klan had something to do with it, but in the documentary I think it's proved that was just a rumour, or some kind of a desperate explanation to find out what had happened.
"He might have been more likely to be involved with bootleggers, because he was very, very anti-drink," she added.
Ms McGillick said that Foley felt that "someone was out to get him" towards the end of his life.
"We do know that towards the end of his life, he was terrified that he was being followed, and that somebody was out to get him," she said.
"But it subsequently happened that he was killed and brutally, he wasn't just murdered for money or robbed.
"He was shot, his fingers were broken, and he was shot in the head and shot in the eye.
"So it was a fairly gruesome death, but obviously he rubbed somebody the wrong way," she added.
Raidió na Gaeltachta broadcaster Dara Ó Cinnéide investigates the murder in Rian na Fola to be broadcast tonight on RTÉ One and the RTÉ Player at 6.30pm.
