Two men have been injured, one critically, in separate incidents in Limerick city.

A man in his 50s is in a critical condition at University Hospital Limerick following an alleged assault on Athlunkard Street.

The incident occurred between 9.30 and 10pm following St Patrick's Day festivities in the city.

It is understood an argument between a number of people escalated and the man was injured in the affray.

A man in his 20s has been arrested in connection with the investigation and is being held at a garda station in Limerick.

Athlunkard Street has now reopened to traffic after Gardaí earlier sealed off the area to carry out a forensic examination.

The closure led to traffic tailbacks throughout the morning.

Gardaí are appealing to any witnesses, or anyone with camera footage (including dash-cam), to contact Henry Street Garda Station on 061 212400, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.

In a separate incident, a man in his 20s was found with serious injuries on Alphonsus Street at around 3am.

He is being treated at Cork University Hospital, where he remains in a serious condition.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who was on the St Alphonsus Street or in the vicinity of the Dock Road or Henry Street during the early hours of this morning and who may have any information or camera footage (including dash-cam), to contact them at Henry Street Garda Station.
