Waterford city came alive this weekend with sirens, lights and heroes as part of the Winterval celebrations.

Emergency services rolled into town, including fire engines, rescue trucks, garda cars, ambulances and lifeboats.

They gathered for the annual Blue Light Parade through the city centre, giving families the opportunity to hop aboard rescue vehicles, meet the crews and learn first-hand about the work of the emergency services.

All donations at this year's event are going to the Tintean Housing Association in Waterford city.

The local charity provides accommodation with support, in a safe environment for women and families who present as homeless.

The Winterval festival includes a Christmas market with more than 50 festive events. Some of the main attractions are Santa's Grotto in the Medieval Museum, a fairy light garden and Christmas cruises on the River Suir.

Director of Winterval Trevor Darmody said: "We are hugely excited to welcome everyone back for the 13th annual Winterval Festival, a truly magical celebration that brings the spirit of Christmas to life across Waterford.

"From dazzling light and drone shows to enchanting performances and hands-on workshops, we have something special for everyone."
