Murder investigation launched after man dies in Cork stabbing

A murder investigation has been launched following the death of a 38-year-old man who was stabbed during a row at a house at Hollyhill in Cork in the early hours of the morning.

Gardaí and emergency services were called to a house at Hollyville, Hollyhill, in Cork at around 4.30am.

They found the man seriously injured, but still conscious. He was taken to Cork University Hospital where he later died.

The man has been named as Mark O'Connell, who was originally from Farranree in the city.

A post-mortem examination will be carried out on his body.

Gardaí began an investigation and a 55-year-old man was arrested for questioning. He is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

A senior investigating officer has been appointed to lead the investigation. A family liaison officer has also been appointed.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact them.
