A Co Tipperary LGFA club has said it has been left "very shocked and deeply saddened" following the death of an 18-year-old woman after the car she was driving went into a river last night.
Gardaí have said the car left the road at Kilaldry Bridge, Kilmoyler, and entered the River Aherlow at around 10pm.
The 18-year-old woman has been named as Brónagh English.
Ms English, who was travelling alone, was recovered from the water by members of the Garda Water Unit.
Moyle Rovers Ladies Football Club said in a statement that it was "very shocked and deeply saddened by the news of the death of Brónagh English".
"As we mourn the very sad passing of a talented young life and former player our sympathies go out to Brónagh's family and we will do all we can to help and support them in whatever way we can."
It added that as a mark of respect all ladies football in Monroe have been suspended for the weekend.
Ms English’s body has been removed from the scene and a post-mortem examination will take place later.
The L3101 is closed for a technical examination and local diversions are in place.
Gardaí are appealing to any witnesses, particularly any road users who may have camera footage, including dash-cam, and were travelling on the L3101 or in the Kilmoyler area between 10pm and midnight last night, to contact Cahir Garda Station on 052 7445630 the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any garda station.
'Heartbreaking'
A Fine Gael councillor for Clonmel has described the incident as "a terrible tragedy".
John Fitzgerald said "a cloud has descended" on the community following the crash, adding that the area is in "despair".
"Heartbreaking is the only word I could use to describe it," he said.
Speaking on RTÉ's News at One, Mr Fitzgerald said: "I knew her well, and my family and all the community here in Clonmel are in shock, absolute shock".
As many as 55 people have died on Irish roads so far this year, including a woman in her 50s who died following a collision between a car and a truck in Kilkenny this morning.
