An investigation is under way after partial human remains were discovered in Co Cork yesterday.

The remains, which are believed to be a human skull, were discovered during excavation work in the garden of a house near Eyeries.

Gardaí were contacted and the area was sealed off.

The scene has been preserved pending an examination by a pathologist, but it has not been declared a crime scene.

Members of the West Cork Divisional Scene Investigation Team are on standby to conduct an examination of the scene.

The Office of the State Pathologist has also been notified.

The remains have been removed for further examination and DNA analysis, the results of which will determine the course of the garda investigation.

Neither the age nor the origin of the remains are known at this stage, but it is felt they may be decades old.

A garda spokesperson said investigations are ongoing.
