Checkpoints set up in Kenmare in search for missing farmer

Gardaí searching for missing Kenmare sheep farmer Mike Gaine have placed a number of checkpoints at junctions around the town this morning, in an attempt to jog the memories of people who may have been on those roads a week ago when he was last seen.

In a renewed appeal for information, gardaí said that Mr Gaine bought phone credit in Centra, Kenmare, at 9.48am on 20 March.

He then left in his Bronze coloured RAV4 - registration 152 KY 366 - which was subsequently found parked in his farmyard, just off the N71 at Carrig East.

Gardaí said Mr Gaine's family have had no contact with him since last week.

They say they are treating his disappearance as a missing person's case.

Mike Gaine was last seen in a shop in Kenmare shortly before 10am last Thursday morning

Gardaí have issued a still image of Mr Gaine from CCTV footage captured in the shop at the time.

Members of the Garda Water Unit searched a number of lakes within a 5km radius of Mr Gaine's home yesterday.

Their work is expected to continue in the area.

Speaking in Kenmare this morning, Superintendent David Callaghan, who is leading the investigation, said gardaí want to speak to anyone who travelled on the road between Kenmare and Moll's Gap on the Ring of Kerry last Thursday, in particular those who have dash cam or phone footage.

Superintendent David Callaghan said gardaí are concerned for Michael Gaine's well-being

"Michael's family have had no contact with him," he said. "His family and An Garda Síochána are extremely concerned for his wellbeing."

Detectives are also continuing to work on the case at an incident room established at Killarney Garda Station.
