Gardaí have released a new CCTV image and issued a renewed appeal for public help in the search for missing 56-year-old Michael Gaine in Co Kerry.

Mr Gaine was last seen in Kenmare town shortly before 10am last Thursday.

He bought phone credit in Centra in Kenmare at 9.48am that morning, gardaí said.

Gardaí have since circulated a CCTV image of Mr Gaine from that time to assist the missing persons investigation.

Yesterday, more than 200 volunteers joined the search for the missing sheep farmer in the Kenmare area.

While gardaí thanked the public for their assistance in recent days, they said they were not seeking additional volunteers for help in land searches today or until further notice.

Mr Gaine is described as being approximately 1.77m (5'10") tall with a stocky build, brown/grey hair and a bushy beard.

When last seen, he was wearing an orange woolly hat, black fleece, blue jeans and black boots.

Gardaí and Mr Gaine's family remain extremely concerned for his well-being.

Speaking on RTÉ's News at One, local councillor Dan McCarthy said Mr Gaine’s disappearance was a shock to the community.

"The whole area here is in complete shock at the thought of him being missing.

"There were over 200 people here, the search was coordinated from the mart here in Kenmare on Saturday and Sunday, and there was over 200 on both days on the search for him," he said.

Mr McCarthy said Mr Gaine and his family were very well known in the area.

"I’d be speaking to the man nearly every day of the week. He was a neighbour and a good friend as well.

"I run a small filling station in Kenmare and he’d call in there every morning, six mornings out of the seven anyway," he said.

"The amount of stuff that was volunteered to the mart from businesses around the area to feed the people and the amount of people that came to help was phenomenal.

"It just shows the esteem that the family are held in in the area, they’d be one of the oldest families around," he added.

Mr McCarthy urged anyone who may know anything about Mr Gaine’s disappearance to contact gardaí.

"They can phone the local garda station in Kenmare or Killarney and they’ll take it from there," he added.
