A fisherman has been fatally injured while fishing for prawns on an Irish trawler in the Porcupine Basin.

The experienced fisherman suffered a fatal blow to the head while working on the Boy Jason, a Castletownbere-based trawler.

The incident on board the vessel happened in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Gardaí said they received reports of an accident aboard a fishing vessel within Irish territorial waters. The vessel's captain notified the Coast Guard, who then alerted gardaí.

The trawler returned to port just after 1am today with the fisherman's body. Gardaí then began an examination of the vessel.

Originally from Ghana, the man had been living in Skibbereen with his family for a number of years and had been working on board the Boy Jason for the past eight years.

The Coroner's office has been informed.

The man's body has been taken to Cork University Hospital where a post mortem examination is to be carried out later.

Investigations by gardaí and the Marine Casualty Investigation Board into the circumstances surrounding the death are underway.
