Two more men have been arrested as part of a joint garda and customs operation off the midwest and south coasts in the past week.

The pair, in their 30s and 40s, were arrested on board a cargo vessel anchored off the Co Clare coast in the Shannon Estuary today.

They were arrested on suspicion of committing a criminal offence, allegedly for facilitating or enhancing a criminal organisation to commit a serious offence.

They are being held at garda stations in Co Clare under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act.

This is the third man arrested on board the vessel since the operation began last Monday.

Five men with addresses in Manchester, Glasgow and Derry as well as a Filipio native working on board the cargo vessel, appeared before a special District Court sitting in Killarney, Co Kerry last night.

All were charged with conspiring to import drugs with a value of more than €13,000 into the State between last Saturday and Monday.

They were remanded in custody to appear before the court in Tralee next Wednesday.

Gardaí say their investigation is continuing.
