Taoiseach Simon Harris has paid tribute to former Mayor of Limerick Gerard Fahy, who has died.

Mr Fahy, also known as Ger, was first elected to Limerick City Council in 1985 and re-elected in 1999 and 2004.

He was elected mayor of the city in 2007 and served as a councillor for Fine Gael for two decades.

In a statement, Mr Harris said: "I want to offer my condolences to Gerard's family and friends. He was an exceptional colleague and was so loyal and committed to the communities he served in Limerick.

"The pinnacle of his career was serving as Mayor of Limerick.

"He often told how he was first at the desk at 7am and home after midnight with a bag of chips. It was the highlight of his career.

"I want to offer my deepest sympathies to his family, friends and his wider Fine Gael family."

Mayor of Limerick John Moran has also expressed his condolences on the passing of Mr Fahy, who was the 811th mayor of the city and had served on the council for three decades retiring in 2014.

He said: "Ger Fahy's unwavering dedication to public service and his deep commitment to our community have left an indelible mark on Limerick. His leadership and passion will be deeply missed."

Director General of Limerick City and County Council Pat Daly said Mr Fahy worked tirelessly for the people of Limerick and his support for local sports and community initiatives have greatly benefitted the city and county.

Limerick City and County Council Príomh Chomhairleoir Cllr Dan McSweeney added: "Ger Fahy often said that having the honour of serving as Mayor of Limerick was the highlight of his political career; it was a role that he served with honour and distinction."
