A rally has taken place in Co Kerry amid concerns over the future of the area's only residential nursing home.

The community rally was held at the Junction Bar in Camp on the Corca Dhuibhn earlier today.

Management of the Aperee Living Nursing Home in Camp was transferred from the private provider to the HSE in September following serious governance issues raised by the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA).

The 35-bed care home, also known as Oceanview, is due to be sold to another company, Riada Care Ltd.

However, the sale is dependent on its re-registration with the Chief Inspector of Social Services of HIQA.

The authority has today confirmed that the application is under consideration.

The Alliance - Supporting Nursing Homes - a trade association that advocates for Nursing Home operators - is backing the campaign to secure the future for the Oceanview facility.

Its spokesperson Shane Scanlan said that rurally there has been a reduction in nursing home care services around the country, and that it was important for the residents that this home be kept in operation.
