An investigation is under way into the death of a 21-year-old woman in a hit-and-run in Co Limerick at the weekend.

Gardaí are searching for the driver of a sliver-coloured Ford Transit van as part of the investigation.

Marguerita Sheridan was struck by the van at Bank Place in Rathkeale shortly after midday on Saturday.

The driver failed to remain at the scene to offer her assistance, or to alert emergency services for help.

Ms Sheridan was taken to University Hospital Limerick, where she later died.

She had given birth to her first child just three weeks ago.

It is understood Ms Sheridan was attempting to close a large set of gates leading into a yard at a house on Bank Place at the time.

Tributes have been paid to her on social media, expressing profound sadness at her death.

Gardaí carried out a technical examination of the location yesterday.
