A 20-year-old man has pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing the death of a journalism student in a hit-and-run incident last year.
Kieran Fogarty, of Hyde Avenue, Ballinacurra Weston, Limerick, pleaded guilty at Limerick Circuit Court to a total of ten counts in relation to the fatal incident.
Joe Drennan, 20, a native of Mountrath in Co Laois and a talented journalism student who was editor of student newspaper The Voice, was waiting at a bus stop in Castletroy on 13 October 2023, when he was struck by a car.
Fogarty pleaded guilty to a total of ten counts, including one count of dangerous driving causing Mr Drennan's death; two counts of failing to offer assistance to Mr Drennan; two counts of failing to report the fatal collision and one count of driving without insurance and one count of driving without a licence.
Prosecuting barrister, John O’Sullivan said Fogarty had also offered a signed plea of guilt to a "miscellany of offences" in respect of three other separate matters.
Judge Colin Daly told the Drennan family he wished to express his "sympathy" to them on their loss.
Mr Drennan's family, including his parents Tim and Marguerite, were present in court.
Judge Daly remanded Fogarty in custody for sentencing on 13 December.
