A woman accused of defrauding the Department of Social Protection has been further charged with 53 additional counts of theft and two of deception.

35-year-old Samantha Cookes, of no fixed abode, appeared in Tralee District Court, where she was accused of stealing sums amounting to tens of thousands of euro from the State in monthly supplementary welfare and disability allowances over a four-year period.

Garda Sergeant Chris Manton told the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions recommended trial on indictment on the new charges.

He said the State was seeking to remand her in continuing custody to 9 October for a book of evidence to be served.

Ms Cookes' solicitor Brendan Ahern said he had no objection to the application.

Judge David Waters remanded her in continuing custody to appear via video link from Limerick Prison next week.

Ms Cookes was the subject of an RTÉ Documentary on One podcast which was released in June and outlined a series of alleged frauds.
