Watch: Mixed reaction to debate among US visitors to Cork

There was mixed reaction to last night's debate among US visitors to Blarney in Co Cork.

Many did not stay up to watch the debate, but caught the highlights this morning.

Others said they had already made up their minds about who they will vote for in the presidential election this November.

On their way to Blarney Castle, we canvassed their views.

Olda Thompson from Minnesota

Olda Thompson from Minnesota stayed up to watch the debate overnight.

She said: "The gift of the gab was to former president Trump, 110%.

"Because he was defending himself against all the attacks that were coming against him, and he was trying to get in what his policies will be and what they had been in the past."

On Kamala Harris' performance, Ms Thompson said she did a lot of talking, a lot of attacking but had no substance.

On Donald Trump's reference to immigrants eating people's pets, she said: "That was probably something he read in the news or heard it, and was repeating it."

Indira Cloyd from Virginia

"No, I did not stay up to watch the debate, but I have a lot of text messages from family members, filling me in on what I missed because it was too late to stay up here," said Indira Cloyd from Virginia.

She said: "My husband said Kamala Harris put Trump in his place, because he was going off topic and he wasn't answering questions.

"I am sticking with Harris.

"It is not because she is black, not because she is a woman, it's because she is well spoken, she's articulate, she's well educated, she was a lawyer so she knows the law. I mean Trump, he makes his own laws. He makes his own rules."

Shirley and Brian from Minnesota

Shirley from Minnesota said she did not stay up to watch the debate, describing US politics at the moment as "embarrassing".

"I just don't want to put in the time, I guess, to watch it."

Brian said: "Neither candidate is a great candidate. The majority of us are moderates, and the candidates are far left and far right. It's just not our deal personally. And we're on holiday so we try to avoid news and politics from home.

"Absolutely, we'll vote. I usually vote third party, there's no chance they're going to win, but that's how I make my voice heard."

James Chanel from Nebraska did not watch the debate live. "I knew what it was going to be about, they were just going to go at each other and not even touch the issues," he said.

He said the main issues in his view, revolve around the US economy.

"Inflation is through the roof, the housing market is through the roof, fuel prices are up, and that wasn't that way four years ago. Hopefully, we'll get the right one in there and he'll change it," Mr Chanel said.
