Over 250 people to compete in Ireland's annual Rubik's Cube championships

Sleight of hand and speedy co-ordination will be the key elements on display this weekend for the latest edition of Ireland's annual Rubik's Cube championships.

The South East Technological University (SETU) Arena on the edge of Waterford city is playing host to the event which will see over 250 competitors from across the country competing for the title of Irish champion.

The Speedsolving All-Ireland Championships coincide with the 50th anniversary of the invention of the Rubik's Cube.

Action has already got under way at the SETU Arena and over the course of the weekend, participants will compete in a range of events including the standard 3x3 cube.


There will also be a one-handed event using the 3x3 cube and a blindfolded competition with the same "traditional" piece, as well as 2x2, 4x4, 5x5, 6x6, and 7x7 cube-solving, as well as contests using differently-shaped "cubes" such as megaminx, pyraminx, square-1 and skewb.

In a few weeks time the Irish team will be jetting off to Pamplona in Spain, to represent Ireland at this year's European Championships.

The Irish team will comprise of 30 competitors who will battle it out with Europe's best in a variety of competitions for European medals.

A select group of four cubers - Ciarán Beahan, CJ Furey, Cillian Hainbach and Iollan Walsh - will represent Ireland at the Nation's Cup which will see them take on the other countries of Europe in head-to-head competitions.

All members of the Irish team will be battling it out in Waterford this weekend.
