Gardaí say they are treating the death of a child found unresponsive in her home in Co Waterford last night as a "tragic accident".

Emergency services went to a home near the town of Dungarvan after a report regarding a two-year-old girl who was found unresponsive.

Paramedics brought the girl to University Hospital Waterford for treatment but she was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Gardaí have appointed a Family Liaison Officer to provide support and help to the family at the moment.

A file is to be prepared for the local coroner but gardaí have confirmed that the death is being treated as a tragic accident.
