Two arrested after man dies after alleged assault in Kerry

Two men have been arrested after another man died following an alleged assault in Co Kerry in the early hours of this morning.

Emergency services were called to an incident in Knockanure, near Listowel, at around 12.30am, where Gerard Kennelly, aged 44, was discovered with fatal injuries and pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim of the incident, which happened on the roadside in Knockanure, suffered a fatal stab wound.

He was from the north Kerry area and part of a well-known family with long-standing ties to the wider community.

His body has been removed to University Hospital Kerry, where a post-mortem examination will be carried out.

Two men, in their 20s and 30s, have been arrested and are being held at garda stations in Kerry.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses, particularly any road users who were travelling in the area of Knockanure village between 12am and 1am and who may have video footage (including dash cam), to contact Listowel Garda Station on 068 50820, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800, 666 111 or any garda station.
