Man seriously assaulted in Cork car park dies in hospital

A man who was seriously assaulted in an incident in Co Cork on Friday night has died in hospital.

The father-of-two, 33, was seriously injured during the incident at a car park on Newtown Road in Cobh.

The victim has been named as Ian Baitson, who was from Cobh.

It is understood that he met another man sometime after 7.30pm and an incident developed, during which the victim sustained a serious injury to his leg and lost a lot of blood.

It is believed that he was struck with a sword.

Emergency services were called to the scene and paramedics worked on the man before bringing him by ambulance to Cork University Hospital.

Since then, he underwent emergency surgery and was placed on a ventilator in intensive care.

The assault happened in a car park on the Newtown Road in Cobh, Co Cork

Gardaí have confirmed that the man died today in hospital.

Officers have been trying to establish exactly what happened, and why, since the incident on Friday night.

They have been speaking to witnesses and people who were in the vicinity of the Newtown Road at the time as well as gathering CCTV footage from the area.

An incident has been established at Cobh Garda Station and a senior investigating officer is leading the investigation.

A post-mortem examination will take place tomorrow which will determine the course of the investigation.

The investigation is being co-ordinated at Cobh Garda Station and any witnesses, or anyone who has footage from a mobile phone or dashcam from around the time of the assault, has been asked to contact gardaí.
