The first phase of a 23km greenway network connecting towns and villages along the former railway line between Midleton and Youghal in east Cork has officially been opened to the public.

Phase 1 of the Midleton-Youghal greenway, whch is an off-road walking and cycling route, stretches 8km from Midleton Train Station to Mogeely.

The project aims to connect Midleton, Mogeely, Killeagh and Youghal with a further section due to open later this year.

Minister of State at the Department of Transport Jack Chambers said that around €18.4 million has been spent by the department in developing the greenway to date.

He added: "The quality of the infrastructure and ease of access will improve the environment of the towns and villages along the way, making it more attractive to opt for sustainable transport modes for daily activities as well as meeting the needs of local communities in terms of health, fitness, and connection to nature."

Seperately, a new Safe Route to School has been opened in the Bishop Street area of Cobh, Co Cork, bringing widened footpaths and a narrowed carriageway to slow traffic near local schools.
