Boy, 10, dies in hospital days after being struck by van in Shannon

A ten-year-old boy who was seriously injured in a road traffic incident in Shannon, Co Clare last Sunday afternoon has died.

He was struck by a van at Purcell Park in Shannon town shortly after 2pm.

The boy was airlifted to hospital in Limerick but later transferred to Children's Health Ireland at Temple Street where he died yesterday.

Gardaí are continuing their investigation into what caused the incident. A man aged in his 20s was arrested on Monday and questioned by gardaí, but later released.

They have renewed their appeal for help from witnesses.

In a statement yesterday, gardaí said: "The ten-year-old boy passed away from his injuries earlier this morning at Children's Health Ireland in Temple Street.

"Gardaí continue to appeal to any witnesses of this collision to come forward.

"Any road users with camera footage (including dash-cam) who were travelling in the Purcell Park area between 1.45pm and 2.30pm on Sunday afternoon are asked to provide this footage to gardaí.

"Anyone with information is urged to contact Shannon Garda Station at 061 365900, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any garda station."
