The 546 kilograms of synthetic drugs seized in Ringaskiddy last Friday have been certified as crystal meth, gardaí have said.

The drugs were initially categorised as synthetic, with initial indications - subject to analysis - that they were crystal meth.

This afternoon, a statement that the drugs were ecstasy has been corrected.

Gardaí say the drugs have been certified as crystal meth or methamphetamine.

The street value of the drugs is unchanged at €32.8 million.

Gardaí are continuing to question two men in their 40s in Co Kerry in connection with last the seizure at the Port of Cork.

Detectives have until mid-morning tomorrow to charge or release the two men.

The drugs were seized in a joint Garda/Revenue Customs Service operation.

They were concealed in machinery which had been loaded onto a shipping container and was about to be transported to Australia.
