A 31-year old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of 61-year-old Michael Foley in Macroom, Co Cork.
Mr Foley's body was found at his home at Annville, Barrett's Place, close to the centre of Macroom on 6 February.
Daniel Hourigan, with an address care of Cork Simon, was brought before Bandon District Court and charged with Mr Foley's murder.
Detective Sergeant Danielle Hegarty gave evidence of arresting Mr Hourigan at 11.18am at Bandon Garda Station.
She said she charged him with the murder of Mr Foley on a date unknown between 31 January and 1 February at Annville, Barrett's Place, Macroom. She said he made no reply to the charge.
Solicitor Eddie Burke was assigned to represent Mr Hourigan.
Mr Hourigan was granted free legal aid, after Mr Burke told the court his client was on job seekers' allowance.
Mr Burke also said Mr Hourigan was seen twice by a doctor when he was in custody. He said his client had "various addictions".
Judge James McNulty said the issue of bail on a murder charge did not arise in the district court.
Prosecuting Garda Sergeant Trish O'Sullivan applied to have Mr Hourigan remanded in custody.
Judge McNulty remanded Mr Hourigan in custody. He said the prison governor would be informed that Mr Hourigan has some addictions and might need medical attention to ease his anxiety.
Mr Hourigan will be back before the district court in Clonakilty next Tuesday, via video link.
Earlier, a woman in her 30s who was also arrested in connection with the investigation was released without charge.
A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
