A driver who gardaí remarked looked "strikingly young" was discovered to be just 13 years old when pulled over in Co Waterford yesterday.
Gardaí have called for a "bit of cop" after the incident, and said that the boy was accompanied by his parents who were in the passenger seats.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), they said that they were told he was "just out for a spin", and added that the car's owner will be brought before the courts.
They added that a juvenile liaison officer has been appointed to the boy.
In Ireland, the minimum age to obtain a driving licence for a car is 17, while the minimum age for some other vehicles, such as a tractor, moped, or motorcycle, is 16.
While on routine patrol late yesterday afternoon, Gardaí in Co. Waterford passed this vehicle.
