A 53-year-old man has been released on bail after he was charged with assault following an incident at a premises housing refugees in Co Kerry.
Alexic Shenduk, who is from Ukraine, appeared before Tralee District Court this morning, charged with assault causing harm to Volodymer Levenets at the Purple Heather in the Gap of Dunloe, Beaufort, near Killarney on Saturday.
Evidence of arrest, charge and caution was given by arresting garda, Detective James Daly.
The court heard that the Purple Heather was a residence for Ukrainian refugees and that both Mr Shenduk and Mr Levenets were living there.
Det Daly said Mr Shenduk was arrested yesterday in relation to the incident.
The court heard that Mr Levenets sustained an injury to his arm and required medical treatment at University Hospital Kerry.
Gardaí objected to bail due to they said was the serious nature of the assault and also had concerns the accused could leave the jurisdiction.
Judge Philip O'Leary said he would grant bail, but said he was concerned about "proximity" of the parties.
Mr Levenets had been discharged from hospital back to the Purple Heather, the court was told.
The court was adjourned briefly while bail conditions were agreed, including that Mr Shenduk try to find alternative accommodation and stay away from the Purple Heather and Mr Levenets, that he surrender his passport, sign on daily at Killarney Garda Station and provide his mobile phone number.
The matter is due to come before Dingle District Court on Friday, for directions from the DPP.
