Woman dies after getting into difficulty in Lough Derg

A woman who was airlifted to hospital last night after getting into difficulty while swimming at Lough Derg, Co Clare has died.

The woman, aged in her 50's, was swimming at Twomilegate, which is a popular leisure and swimming location on Lough Derg just outside the village of Killaloe.

The incident happened at around 6.30pm when she became unwell in the water.

The Killaloe coastguard unit was tasked to the area along with an air ambulance helicopter.

The woman received urgent medical attention at the lake before being airlifted to University Hospital Limerick, where she passed away today.

A post-mortem examination will take place to determine how the woman died and gardaí have confirmed they are carrying out inquiries to prepare a file for the Coronor’s Court.
