Uisce Éireann has warned that a precautionary boil water notice, which will affect around 21,000 homes and businesses on the outskirts of Cork City, may run for several days.
The precautionary boil water notice, announced by Uisce Éireann and Cork County Council, comes into effect from midnight tomorrow, affecting some 20,941 customers supplied by the Glashaboy Water Treatment plant in East Cork.
Areas affected will include Glanmire, Glounthaune, Little Island and Carrigtwohill.
The water utility company said the notice was issued due to planned industrial action arising from a dispute between the Unite trade union and eight local authorities.
"The Boil Water Notice may run for several days as we will need to assess the impacts on the treatment plant and processes post-strike. There may also be some disruption to water services, in particular, the speed at which bursts to the water network are repaired", according to the statement.
The dispute centres on demands by the Unite trade union for a commitment that water staff transferring from local authorities to Uisce Éireann will retain their pubic service status.
