A man in his 20s has been arrested after he was found to be in possession of what is believed to be an imitation firearm on a train yesterday evening.

Gardaí were alerted to the situation after a passenger on the Cork-bound service became aware that a man on the train had been carrying a firearm.

Gardaí boarded the train near Templemore Train Station in Tipperary at around 6.50pm and identified the man.

Local uniform and plainclothes gardaí initially attended the scene assisted by the regional armed support unit.

Upon being searched, the man was found in possession of what gardaí said was "believed to be an imitation firearm", which is now the subject of a technical examination.

The man is currently being held at a garda station in Tipperary under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.
